The Cruz campaign sent emails instructing its supporters in Iowa to tell Carson?s supporters that Carson had already dropped out of the race, so they?d change their votes in favor of Cruz instead. And it?s far from the only documented instance of Ted Cruz cheating in Iowa.

The Iowa Secretary of State has already accused Ted Cruz violating state election laws by sending out a flyer which implied that Iowa republicans would be in legal trouble if they failed to show up and vote. But the accusations coming from the Ben Carson campaign appear to carry more weight in the perception department. Although Carson has been plummeting in the polls for months, he was still the fourth most popular republican candidate heading into Iowa voting.


In the end, Ben Carson finished with 9.3% of the Iowa vote and he had been polling at an average of just 7.7%, suggesting that he didn?t lose any meaningful number of votes to Ted Cruz despite the trickery. But the mere attempt at cheating has forced Cruz into a position where he?s having to apologize today instead of playing up the momentum of having won, meaning it may impact him negatively.
