Lamar HS students are both dead. From what they're saying, one killed the other and then committed suicide. They were known as best friends. There are no words for how sad this is. One of them may have had mental health challenges. They are saying parents can be charged for negligence bc the gun was in the home where this occurred and belonged to one of the parents.

Do you think they should? It sounds like an awful thing to do to someone who has just lost a child in a horrible manner. BUT, we're seeing this a lot it seems...where shooters are getting guns from their own family members.

Why are people so careless when we have such obvious problems??

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 6 years ago -

There's another story tonite about teens involved in a shooting over road rage issues.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 6 years ago -

I think the parents are going through enough. They're going to all feel guilty about the gun and every other thing they've ever done. That's what happens when kids die doing something they shouldn't be doing. :((

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 6 years ago -

But I don't get why they hear all this happening and still don't secure weapons?? And these kids have mental health problems?

There is a responsibility issue here. I'm not meaning to pile on these particular parents but for those out there NOW who can do something preventative for the future, they need to.

What, your thoughts and prayers didn’t work? I’m shocked.

I_won't_tell --- 6 years ago -

Fuzz why do you keep being nothing but an _sshole?

You're hideous.

sdanielmcev --- 6 years ago -

And these kids have mental health problems?
Some parents just give the kids a pill to calm them down without knowing it can cause a chemical imbalance, resulting in other mental problems down the roaf

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 6 years ago -

Sometimes medication works- it's such a big and untreated problem in this day and age, I don't think anyone has the answers.

TinktheSprite --- 6 years ago -

I think Gun 101 teaches gun safety, does it not? The parent failed that part. Had the gun been properly locked and/or unloaded those kids would be alive today. It doesn't matter how someone learns a lesson. They can learn lessons while in prison. Parents are responsible for another kid's death. They are guilty. OH, and take their gun license away...if they have one?

If you own a gun, own the responsibility that goes along with it. Safety is also your right as well as the right of others.

fuzz has a very valid point - conservatives in the US focus on thoughts and prayers, and not an actual discussion on gun violence in the US.
This country is becoming numb to the death and destruction caused by guns - if Sandy Hook couldn't change our mind, what can?

It's a tiny bit of relief (and I mean TINY) that parents of murdered children are now seeing themselves being elected into politics. It won't be enough in the near future, but it's a start.

I think the parents are going through enough.

So they shouldn't be held responsible for their gross negligence? That is precisely why our children continue to be murdered - no one wants to have a discussion or hold anyone accountable.
Who cares what they are "going through."
I get that the threat of locking someone up isn't going to put much of a dent into the situation. Rapists know they are going to jail, and they still rape. Burglars know they're going to jail, and they still steal. Drug dealers know they will go to jail, and they're still selling.

What's the solution?

I think Gun 101 teaches gun safety, does it not? The parent failed that part.

Think of how many children of cops shoot themselves with their parent's weapons. Gun safety doesn't mean anything, when people don't put into practice the tools and common sense they have learned, or should have learned.

sdanielmcev --- 6 years ago -

So they shouldn't be held responsible for their gross negligence
They are being held responsible.
Gun violence is being discussed. That's what this thread is about.
Guns aren't the problem. They are inanimate objects.

txwareagle --- 6 years ago -

conservatives in the US focus on thoughts and prayers, and not an actual discussion on gun violence in the US.

That is such a sophomoric view point. The attack against "thoughts and prayers" is nothing more than a jab at the religious. If someone were really interested in reform, they wouldn't start with such a divisive argument.

and they're still selling.

So you're saying only the law abiding follow the laws.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 6 years ago -

Think of how many children of cops shoot themselves with their parent's weapons.

Care to back that assertion up with some data?

Prolix Raconteur --- 6 years ago -

Because you just know how careless cops are about gun safety, right?

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 6 years ago -

"Fuzz has a very valid point"

Do you think anyone believes that saying " thoughts and prayers" is conservatives doing nothing?? It's meant as EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, not legislation. People praying don't hold public office in case you didn't know. And Fuzz is a trouble causing drama troll. You people who want to just stir up trouble should take an honest (if that's even possible) look at yourselves and ALL your screen names and ask yourself if causing fighting and discourse is what you want your legacy on earth to be.

Let's hear some some solutions YOU have??

Saturn --- 6 years ago -

fuzz has a very valid point

You're kidding, right?

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 6 years ago -

The reason I said the parents are going through enough is I know the kind of guilt and pain they're experiencing. They'd probably welcome punishment, because of it.
