I'm trying to see which is best option for weight lost/training in kingwood area. What has worked for others. I'm at my wits ends on my weight lost journey. Last year this time i was near my target weight, however in past year my weight has gone back up. It's clear what I'm doing isnt working so now I'm ready to seek outside help. So please share your experiences with either option and reccomedations.

Try a spinning class- it's hard and it's fun-

Prolix Raconteur --- 10 years ago -

Personal trainer initially. You can hurt yourself pretty easily in crossfit when you are first starting out. Once you're in better shape and working out regularly, crossfit can be pretty rewarding.

I've seen the biggest and most lasting difference in people that do crossfit.

One of the ladies at a resale shop said she's gotten a lot of stuff from women doing crossfit because their old clothes are too big now.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

It's a lot to take on if you've been sedentary-

ACHS --- 10 years ago -

I'm leaning more towards crossfit for the group setting

Prolix Raconteur --- 10 years ago -

My advice in that case would be to pace yourself and don't think you have to finish every WOD as quickly as the rest of the group. Know your limits and be aware of what your body can take and is capable of.

Whatever you choose be sure to decide to make it a lifestyle change. I lost a lot of weight and gained much back. Why? Because I returned to my old ways.

ACHS --- 10 years ago -

Thanks Mom2..it was a life style change last year. But we moved, kids were out of the contry during the summer and i went back to my old eating habits. Now I'm ready get back on track

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

I suggested spinning, because it's a group setting, with music- plus way less likely for injuries- ask the instructor to set up your bike for the correct position-

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

Prolix, for me, I'm too competitive to pace myself- if this poster is like me, he/she could get hurt-

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

It'd burns a lot of calories, and you sweat like a pig-

ACHS --- 10 years ago -

I tried spin and just couldn't get into it. It was the 1st and only group class i ever quit during the workout. However, I might try it again and asked the instructor for help.

LOL, I jacked up a tendon in my arm about 4 months into crossfit that took me out of it pretty much for good. That was a couple of years ago and it still flairs up when I strain it just right. Same issue; I pushed myself too hard trying to be a bada$$ I guess. Too bad really, because I really did enjoy it and it's a hell of good workout.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

Most of us are competitive, and try to keep up- that's the problem with a class like cross fit- if I were he, I start with something not as dangerous- and work up to cross fit-

Sharticus --- 10 years ago -

Try FitCrew. They are personal trainers that also offer group classes. They are really good. you can find them on Facebook and they are located in that Humble strip mall that has the Shipleys in it. It's on the 59S feeder road right past Chik Fil A

The irony of fast/junk food places right next to gyms always cracks me up.

Texashley28 --- 10 years ago -

You can do cross fit in your own home..go for a run and then do 100 frog jumps(5 sets of 20)..100 Pushups, 100 crunches..that's what I've been doing and im super toned again. Lost all my baby weight by counting calories and exercise. Eat 500 calories less a day.. for a week and you will lose 1lb a week. 3500 calories equals one pound of fat. Its really all about diet. Exercise just helps burn the calories faster.

Texashley28 --- 10 years ago -

I also find it much more fun to listen to music while exercising.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

That's what's fun about classes-- Zumba and spinning both have great (and loud) music!

Texashley28 --- 10 years ago -

I did spinning at QLS and it was very fun..until Kristen moved to Canada :( She was the best. Hubby got me a spin bike and a stair master for the house..It will save us money in the long run.

DVaz --- 10 years ago -

Personal trainers are expensive. I was getting paid 32$/hour back in 2002/2003. The gym charged the client 75$!

Just take the free classes offered by gyms.

Texashley28 --- 10 years ago -

We were paying 160 a month at Lifetime Fitness. Then they let our 1 year old escape out of the daycare..so no more gym.

snowprincess --- 10 years ago -

The fastest way to lose weight is a healthy diet. No need to count calories, just focus on plant based foods, lean protein, and water. Minimal processed foods. Then add some cardio and weight training and you will feel and look great!

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 10 years ago -

While you're thinking about it, get out and walk a couple miles a day. Speed Walking gives great results, and has very little risk for injury. It works your heart, burns calories and tones the body as well. And people tend to stick with things that are convenient to regular use. We have great green belts for walking!

Then if you decide to do something else, you will have at least been doing something and moving your body and preparing it for more difficult stuff.

Gigix4 --- 10 years ago -

I can vouch for this! Even if you only do it 5-6 days a week, it works!

ACHS --- 10 years ago -

Thanks everyone. Hopefully I get home in time to make the 7pm spin class at the Y.

PokerFace --- 10 years ago -

It's definitely 85-90% about your diet. You can work out all you want, but if you are aren't watching what you eat, it doesn't matter. Count your calories and keep track of every single thing you put in your mouth. It's the best way to keep you accountable.

Jpgirl --- 10 years ago -

Crossfit is really meant for an experienced exerciser who has a firm foundation both aerobically and strength wise.
May I ask why you walked out of the class? Was it the instructor, the music or being uncomfortable on the bike? I tell my newbies to give it 5-7 times to decide if they love it or hate it and to try different instructor. At the Y I preferred Marivi and Matt.
Personal training may be a way to go- personal attention to all aspects of of the equation. I am a personal trainer and if I wanted to hire a trainer to work on me I'd hire- Laura Bush! And guess what- she trains at the Y on West Lake Houston. I've also heard great things about Andy Baker who owns Kingwood Strength Training( I think that's the name)- it's on Northpark. I Don't know him nor have I worked with him- but his reputation is good.
Good Luck!!!

sheddy --- 10 years ago -

My husband has a bad back, but he is religious about getting his elliptical. He is on his third one. Our neighbor goes to a trainer. He says he doesn't miss, because he is paying for the time. Otherwise, he would think of ten reasons not to go.

ACHS --- 10 years ago -

jpgirl, i walked out because my bottom was uncomfortable on the bike. I felt out of place for the 1st time in a fitness class. Ive taken boot camp at old QLS and at lifetime. I played basket ball and ran track in HS and college. SO i'm always gained for good workout. I would really love to play bball again. I will try spin class again, this time ill speak to the instructor prior to start of class.

I didn't make it to the Y for 7pm class. Left office late and missed my normal bus. I did join a fitbit group at my job today, they walked several times a day around the hospital and take the stairs.

Jpgirl --- 10 years ago -

ACHS- that's completely understandable and normal. i took my very first cycle class at a conference for fitness professionals. At the time I taught 13 hours a week- I was very fit. SPIN ( The Trademark program) was brand new and just introduced. I walked out after 15 minute- my legs and rear were toast! I thought to myself- this program will never last!!!
I tell my new members that story- and then I tell them that their rear ends and legs are going to hurt for the first 5-10 rides. The padded cycling shorts help BUT don't spend the money until you're sure you like it. Everyone says a cycle class is the hardest class. I disagree- it's the only group class where you decide how hard you work- you control the resistance- and believe it or not you also can control when you sit and stand. In my classes I give the participants the option to sit and stand when THEY want not when I tell them. I think that the "hard" perception comes in because it's intimidating to go into a dark room where everyone is riding a bike as hard as they can going no where quick. They look crazy- it's hard to get into that. AND it just may not be for you- And that's ok too. Personally I hate Zumba- I've tried it many times and I just hate it- my body doesn't move like that and I feel like a dork doing it. The reason I feel like that is Im a verbal learner and the instructor doesn't cue - they point and move- I can't process that.
Point is - find something you love and do it- try a variety of stuff- try a trainer- try Crossfit ( be very careful)-try running - heck try Zumba! Eventually something will click and you will find your groove!! Good luck

them --- 10 years ago -

Apparently all forms of exercise are safe, except for crossfit.

PokerFace --- 10 years ago -

Cross fit is Olympic style lifting at high reps for time. If not extremely careful about form, it's a recipe for disaster. You really need a good lifting base, which is what a trainer (a good one) can teach you.

What makes people who do cross fit so fit? It's basically a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout. You can easily get that in a spin class or ask a trainer to incorporate it into your workout.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

Exactly- you have to really know what you're doing, in Crossfit- your form is everything- if you have a bad neck, lifting over your head is difficult- it's also fast- very easy to pull something-

The Day I Tried to Live --- 10 years ago -

If you do crossfit, this is what you will become:

Exactly. This isn't for newbies IMO. Especially someone who hasn't been working out on some level.
They have HIIT classes at the Y. I took one and it was very hard, and I've been working out forever. It was hard and strenuous. I typically like the challenge. But I have back issues that if aggravated lay me up for quite a while. I didn't want to risk it. I would rather not be injured and deal with that.

It's just very high intensity and the class moves fast which, IMO, means you have to have the right form non stop or there will be issues with injury. Not for beginners!
