At what age do you think it's OK for a child or teenager to open account on facebook? How much monitoring do you think is necessary?

At what age is someone too old to be on Facebook? Do you think there is an age limit at all? My mom seems to think so and apparently I am past that age.

But consider this -she also thinks that once you hit a certain age you should NOT have long hair or wear shorts in the summer.

This is what I've been dealing with which really helps your self esteem. Ugh!! ;)

Ed Earl --- 10 years ago -

Kids - 18
Adults - any age is okay

Identity Crisis --- 10 years ago -

Children should not have Facebook accounts. Why risk bullying, "secret friends", or any other problems like that. Have a family account, or let her know when she is in college she can have one.

Eliza2 --- 10 years ago -

Lots of elderly use Facebook to stay connected with family and friends and reconnect with former neighbors, classmates, etc.

Dorothy Parker --- 10 years ago -

Depends on the kid.

On average, I'd say 7th-8th grade.

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

Do you think age 11 is too young? He is very mature for his age. But no else of his other friends have one. So far my decision has been no. But I wanted to get more advise from other moms.

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

Thank you Ed, Identity, and Dorothy. I think you are thinking along the same lines as me. ;)

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

As far as older people my mother thinks the cut off point should be 50 years old. She is a very private person And she doesn't want pictures of her grandchildren on the internet.

FabFive --- 10 years ago -

Age 11 is way too young. Kids don't understand that the Internet is forever.

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

Age 11 is way too young. Kids don't understand that the Internet is forever.?

You are right. I agree with you!! That's why so far I have said no.

mutton --- 10 years ago -

I am still trying to get me my space account to work...

My 11 year old girls have Facebook.
They have friends and family all over the country in both the military and horse worlds, and it's an easy and fun way for them all to keep in touch.

My girls are surrounded by an amazing group of young riders, professional trainers, and kids they grew up with on base, and until they break my trust, I will allow them the ability to keep in contact with those they love and value.

aragon --- 10 years ago -

Doesn't matter how young as long as you control it closely. And only have grandparents as friends on it. :)

As for being too old? Never too old for anything. Hell, I'm growing my hair long for the first time in my life. I figure, what the hell.

Rubicon --- 10 years ago -

My oldest got a Facebook account when he got into 9th grade because one of his classes required it. He hardly ever uses it. I don't think the kids use it much anymore or maybe it's just my ds. Doesn't FB have an age limit? I thought you had to be 13 or older. We wouldn't let our kids get one until they were old enough for that rule.

You're never too old for FB!

FANCY PANTS --- 10 years ago -

I let my kids have a facebook when they are 17. It's really important to check out their friends and stuff. I know their passwords and they know mine. That way they can check up on me and I can check up on them. They don't care because they have every right to look at my stuff and they know how FB works and that lots of people can see what they put on it. Even some that they do not know.

You can call me Michelle --- 10 years ago -

I think kids need to be at least 15 or 16. Anything under age 18 would need to be monitored.

What's the deal with long hair? Mine is very long and I don't plan on cutting it anytime soon. I think it is fine if you take care of it. Hmm. Shorts, I mean seriously with a heat index soaring into 115 some days, it is either shorts or not leaving the house. Maybe not super short shorts, but you shouldn't have to have a heat stroke just to appease someone.

Jpgirl --- 10 years ago -

50???? Geez how old is your Mom? She sounds like what my Mom used to say! I could only imagine what my Mom would say to me now- lol-she's probably turning over in her grave. Not only do I FB, I still wear shorts- even if my legs are all Jacked up from scraps and scratches, ride my bike ( wild Waco 100 coming up next week), still climbing up and down ladders( she'd really freak "old" people shouldn't climb ladders - they'll fall), and run up and down stairs ( she hated that habit).
Doing "young" stuff keeps you young. Everyone has to stay flexible and roll with the flow or get passed by. My dd loves the fact that we ( her Dad and I) can hang with the "young'uns"

dogs --- 10 years ago -

You have no idea what other people are posting (friends of friends, etc): crude jokes, inappropriate photos/videos, personal problems, etc. Your kids can be exposed to things you have no idea about. I remember a friend was angry when I wrote about how my son discovered there was no Santa - he said I shouldn't have posted that because his kids use his Facebook account to play games.

Valentine --- 10 years ago -

I think FB says you must be 13 to have an account. I'm sticking with that.

Wicked --- 10 years ago -

Facebooks rules are...18. If you will notice the kids below that age...have made up birthdays. For example, my 16 year old grand daughter, is really 23 according to her facebook page.

Valentine --- 10 years ago -

How old do you have to be to create a FB account?

How old do you have to be to sign up for Facebook?

To be eligible to sign up for Facebook, you must be at least 13 years old.

Wicked --- 10 years ago -

OMG, the rules have changed. When I first started, it was 18. That is so wrong. Sorry for the mis info. I had no idea the rules were different now. I guess I can tell my grand daughter she can put in the right info :)

Fiona --- 10 years ago -

I would say 12 or 13 for a fb page with settings on private. Although my 16 yr old has a fb page she really does not use it. She says fb is for old people. They use instagram.

I don't think there is a cut off age at all.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

poor thing! you're over 50 with a child 11?? you'll be raising him on SS! LOL!

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

about the hair and shorts- if you look young, long hair is fine- the only time I'd vote no is when you see a woman with long, pretty air, and she turns around and looks 80! HAH! and no gray!

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

Oh Lord I'm not 50! ;) lol

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

I hit 30 like a brick wall. I can't imagine how I will be when I hit 40! Lol

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

oh, good! I thought your mom was talking about you!

Jpgirl --- 10 years ago -

Lol @Awesome. Yeah I wouldn't have like being 50 with an 11 year old!! My neighbors are over 50 with kids under 10!!!!!!

Keeper --- 10 years ago -

Most high school aged kids do not have FB anymore. They communicate via text or twitter.
Many of the classes or athletic programs send updates to the students or athletes by text.

My philosophy is and always has been trust my kids until they give me a reason NOT to trust them.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

Lol @Awesome. Yeah I wouldn't have like being 50 with an 11 year old!! My neighbors are over 50 with kids under 10!!!!!!?

oh, your poor neighbors!!!! they'll probably end up moving to an old folk's home just to get the kids out of the house!

Just stuck --- 10 years ago -

I know a couple who are 62 & 60 and their kids are 19 & 20... No thanks!

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

young people are getting married at 30- I guess they ought to think about not waiting until over 40 to start their family-

April --- 10 years ago -

Lol, we were both almost 41 when our youngest arrived. she is a senior now and I am starting to feel my age. I would not have changed one thing about this journey.

SSG Army Wife --- 10 years ago -

You are only as old as you feel! ;) Age doesn't matter as long as you live a happy life. Try to live with no regrets. ;)

As I said before I hit 30 like a brick wall but the more I think about it - I'm 38 and I don't feel 38 so maybe hitting 40 won't be so bad. Its just a number eight? Lol plus if I think about it my 30's have been better then my 20's. So maybe my 40's will be even better.
