HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) ? A police dashboard video released Tuesday shows that a Texas state trooper tried to pull a black motorist out of her car, then drew his stun gun and threatened her after she refused to follow his orders during a traffic stop.

The roadside encounter swiftly escalated into a shouting confrontation as the officer attempted to drag 28-year-old Sandra Bland from her vehicle, with the officer at one point saying, "I will light you up," as he held the stun gun.

this is the woman that they said committed suicide in jail. Watch the video and more importantly, listen to it. She was completely out of control. You don't have to like cops but we need them to keep people following the rules. The woman completely escalated the situation and should not have expected a different outcome from the traffic stop. Imagine what the county will look like if we all do whatever we feel like doing. Respect the uniform, follow instructions. Put the cigarette out...nobody likes the smell of smoke.

The suicide is a different issue and we'll see how the investigation turns out. It is sad and never should have gotten to the point of her being arrested but she caused it.

Why did the cop order her to put out her cigarette IN HER OWN CAR?

Why was she ordered out of her car for failing to use turn signal?

No, this is more heavy handed police tactics, not traffic safety enforcement. All that was necessary was to write the ticket. This cop escalated the whole thing.

You're out of your mind...he had NO reason to order her to do ANYTHING....

Well to anyone watching who has a brain that is...

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

what would you do if a cop asks (not orders) you to put out a cigarette? I would imagine he didn't want to smell that nasty smell. She refused IN HER OWN CAR so he asked her to step out of the car. She wasn't ordered out of the car for the turn signal infraction. I'm sure the cop would handle it differently next time but he didn't do anything to deserve that level of ugliness. She could have shut her mouth. I personally don't want to live around people like her. She's trashy. She could have just complied and been on her way. If a citizen wants to go on a power trip, don't do that with a cop.

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

troll...ignore it

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

Well to anyone watching who has a brain that is...

you are part of the problem...project what happens if cops have no authority...seriously, project that out about 10-20 years. Do you let your kids do whatever they want? How long would you let someone run their mouth like that? Who keeps smoking when the cop is talking to you? Same with the phone? She had no business deciding whether he should stop her or not...take that up with the court.

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

She wasn't ordered out so then he took her out with force? Where's your brain?

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

PA, you ARE the problem, sad thing is you can vote...idiot.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

PA, you ARE the problem, sad thing is you can vote...idiot.

100% liberal! You guys will screw everything up, won't you. You would never be able to handle yourself with as much restraint as that cop did, would you.

And fuzzy, she was ordered out of the car...where is your brain?

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

In your words "wasn't ordered out of the car for turn signal". So she was forced out of the car for what reason?

Sure this woman could have been more polite, but I don't think force and jail was necessary. Unfortunate and sad that she died.

No insults please, this is your warning.

As far as the subject, I smell a rat. I find it hard to believe she killed herself. Even more disturbing is to consider there could be so much under handed ness that a murder could happen in a police station. Scary, in a word, to think this kind of corruption is happening.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

notice the part that says "for turn signal"? If you actually watched the whole video, you'll see that she's ordered out because she didn't want to put out the cigarette...by the way, nobody can see what she was doing in the car.

It is very unfortunate that she died. We know that is not the fault of this officer though. It could be suicide as I expect it to be but perhaps something happened at the jail. We do know that this situation got out of hand, everyone could have acted better/differently but she controlled the situation. This would NEVER have happened to me or anyone in my family...not this situation!

Max01 --- 9 years ago -

Advice my Dad gave me when dealing with police when pulled over: Only use the words, "Yes Sir", "No Sir", "Thank You Sir" and then go on your way. It has worked every time.

Hopefully people will wait for the investigation to complete before they burn the town down or try and run this police officer out of town.

One time when I was pulled over I was smoking, police officer told me to put my cig out. I did.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

pretty simple Max! It's worked for everyone I know. It's only the ones looking for a fight and challenge that have problems. Imagine that!

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

I was asked to show my ID at a sobriety check point, I said no thank you, the officer said ok thanks for your time have a nice night....just be polite. She was agitated but the officer still over stepped and somehow she died because he was trying to prove a point

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

you'll see that she's ordered out because she didn't want to put out the cigarette.

He doesnt have the authority to order her out of the car for that...believe what you will but you're wrong.

Let's all say no thanks and then complain about the drunk drivers. Good for you that you have a superiority complex and don't want to play by the rules that keep your butt safe. It's wrong no matter how you slice it steinhoister.

No matter what happens with the investigation, she didn't die from the traffic stop. She either killed herself of someone in the jail did something inappropriate. All could have been avoided by her making better decisions.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

you win steinhoister...she's dead and I'm not. You argue like spoiled little brat. This is all ridiculous. Do what the cop says and the situation moves forward. She did not have the right to ignore his order. She should have put the cigarette out. If people act like you propose, the country will be a worse place and people will suffer unnecessarily. It's that simple!

Leila --- 9 years ago -

It is suspect for sure. I have family in that area. It is known for racial issues and small town cop mentality. You do not cross them. Yes, she was belligerent and rude. I have to deal with some of that in my own profession but I can not lose my cool. But the cop is supposed to be the professional here and it is obvious he felt his authority was threatened and went to town. There wasn't a fear for his life, he was just pissed off.

I was taught that you need to basically kiss the police officer's butt if you are ever stopped and just "yes, sir, no sir" and do a tap dance if asked to. I grew up when police brutality was a fact of life and you just kept your head down low and hoped for the best. These times are changing but we aren't there yet.

I read where there are looking into tampering of some police video during the stop. If true, that should not be hard to determine...although it would be pretty dumb.

steinhoister2016 --- 9 years ago -

All could have been avoidsed if he had better training and knew his place...you're wrong again.

About the check point...YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO TRAVEL THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT SHOWING YOUR PAPERS, THIS ISN'T EAST GERMANY IN THE 70'S...

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

I'm all for being respectful to police. There are many great officers. However, they have absolutely zero right to force you to do anything for not wanting to put out a cigarette, sorry.

I'm sure everyone has had a bad day, show a little compassion to both sides.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

he didn't shoot her, he asked her to get out of the car.

funny thing is that your politics allow for all other freedom infringements...it's gonna catch up to you

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

Hahahaha do some research on the republican patriot act. You think liberals are infringing on your rights?

I imagine democrats voted for it to. Just like they voted for the war in Iraq.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

republican patriot act

nice try, perhaps you should do some research. Most of the act expired this year. It was replaced by the president's Freedom Act. It really doesn't impact my freedom...it means I might get caught if I sponsor terrorism or launder money...that doesn't bother me. I want the good guys to catch the bad guys. Showing ID when voting or traveling doesn't bother me either. (I can imagine steinhoister telling TSA that he won't ID himself if flying.) There are simply some areas where we are subject to inspection. If we were all 100% free, liberals wouldn't last.

by the way, failure to signal a lane change in Texas is an arrestable offense...even though it didn't start out to be the officer's intent.

Proud American --- 9 years ago -

PA, so you support mass data collection and wiretapping without a warrant?

I don't think you really care what I think.

Red Heifer --- 9 years ago -

talking back to a cop is not a crime, but too many cops don't know that. the cop set up an adversarial situation and then he couldn't back down.

the cop's behavior is one of the reasons that cops lose their legitimacy. they need to clean up their behavior if they're going to clean up the public's perception.
